Eastern Crescent Exclusive Report

New Delhi, December 9, 2019: Thousands of people came out at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Monday to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB). Several parties under the different banner gathered to take part in a protest spearheaded by India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) against the bill, protesters carried placards with slogans such as: ‘Reject CAB! Boycott NRC! Save Constitution! Assam will Never Accept CAB!”

People unanimously raised their voice saying that India needs jobs, education and health care, not nationwide NRC and demanded the government to pay attention to the core issues such as employment, women safety, and economic reforms.

The CAB will grant citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan after seven years of stay in the country even if they do not possess proper documents. While Opposition leaders and activists have slammed the Bill, terming it "anti-constitutional" and "divisive" aimed to alienate the Muslims in the country, in the North East, especially Assam, the bill is seen as a threat to the interests of the region's indigenous communities.

Maulana Badruddin Ajmal, Member of Parliament, from Dubri, Assam participated in the protest and told media that the bill is against Indian constitution and said we strongly oppose the bill and will continue fighting against the bill. He further said that around 12000 people have lost their lives in only Assam and costed the government a huge amount. “The Home Minister, Amit Shah is trying to divide the Indian nation into Hindu-Muslim theory”, Maulana Qasmi added.
