Last month I have already delivered speech on the topic time management a secret to success in which extraordinary importance of time management was highlighted and it was declared that apart from being a secret to success time management is also a religious, official and civic duty, and I greatly hope that some of the friends who listened to the speech must have made their time table. Now today’s speech is to enlighten the ways and the techniques to deal with the problems which are likely to impede the practice on it.
The first and foremost thing is that time table must be such a comprehensive that it must not escape even a single second out of 24 hours it should also encompass one’s up and down walking or journey from the home to the masjid, the office , the class room ,from one town to another and so on. The second thing is that the time requirement of each and every single work should be first delicately and repeatedly estimated then only the required amount of time should be dedicated to each and every work. For instance making wuzu is estimated to require hardly 4 to five minutes then hardly 5 to 6 minutes should be dedicated to that not 7 to 10 minutes, having, break fast, lunch snack or dinner is estimated to need 15 minutes then hardly 16 to 17 minutes should be dedicated for that not 20 to 25minutes
Before we cast a glance at -a couple of hurdles and remedies let us first go through a noble piece of hadeeth that will play a key role in the comprehension of the impediments and remedies. As per Tirmizi Jami` at-Tirmidhi » Chapters On Zuhd
The greatest preceptor of the world and the last prophet of Allah Muhammad is reported to have said :
“Surely, of the excellence of a person’s Islam is that he leaves what does not concern him.”
About this noble piece of hadeeth Muhaddiseen rahimahumullah said that this is among the 4 pieces of ahadeeth on which all the Islamic merits and good qualities depend, They consider it among the noble pieces of ahadeeth which are principles of Islamic morals and ethics and the rest of the good conducts and morals emanate and derive only from them.
The message of this noble piece of hadith is that we shouldn’t have sole interest in doing anything which isn’t obligatory upon us.
Apart from the activities and responsibilities we have incorporated in our time table, we will definitely face so many things which will seem to be very much moral and obligatory and we will think that we should also take even a passive part in them. But my dear brothers we should not do so. We should not be busy doing anything which neither relies on us, nor we rely on it to fulfill our any dire need.
We should not think that we are only the solution for each and every misery or need of mankind but rather we must believe that Allah the creator has created many others who will deal with the rest of the problems of the community, the nation or the humanity. The tendency of doing everything will not help the humanity but rather our strict and unprecedented focus of attention in that which is necessary and obligatory from our Shari’ah or from our expertise and best performance in our specific sphere and domain will only help the community, the nation and the entire humanity.
Once the Prophet (ﷺ) came while a woman was sitting with me. He said, “Who is she?” I replied, “She is so and so,” and told him about her (excessive) praying. He said disapprovingly, “Do (good) deeds which is within your capacity (without being overtaxed) as Allah does not get tired (of giving rewards) but (surely) you will get tired and the best deed (act of Worship) in the sight of Allah is that which is done regularly.” (Sahih al-Bukhari )
This hadith also tells us that we shouldn’t do the work which is beyond our capacity. But whatever we do should be in a good manner.
Mostly we break our time table because our friends come to us and sit for a long time and we consider it an unconditional virtuous task to entertain them, because Allah’s prophet is reported to have said that those two people will be under the shadow of Allah on the day of resurrection who love each other for the sake of Allah, meet each other for that and for the same they separate from each other.
Most of us have misunderstood this hadeeth that mere meeting our Muslim brothers and spending our time on that is a righteous deed. In this noble piece of hadeeth itself, it is indicated that only meeting is not a virtuous task but separation is also virtuous. In the text it is mentioned that separation is also a virtuous task if it is for the pleasure of Allah here I infer from it that not coming to meet any one, maintenance of separation and isolation will also be virtuous. It will also be a virtuous task if it is for the obedience to Allah’s orders, for the sake of the delivery of diverse sorts of services of Islam demanded in an specific area.
In the other words we should kindly understand that the purpose of meeting is the pleasure of Allah then if we find it also lies in other work which benefit is more important than attending meeting or programmes, then we can understand that to meet our friends. This used be practiced by the companions of the beloved prophet.
Without any shadow of doubt to accompany the prophet of Allah was the most heartening and lovely work for each of them but they did tolerate separation from the beloved prophet for the sake of religion and the greater use of their time for it, therefore Ovais al Qarni couldn’t meet the beloved prophet and the Muslim Ummah knows his value. Without any atom of doubt his value is that the beloved prophet asked His companions to request him to pray for their forgiveness if any one meets him and Al hamdullillah even sayyeduna Hazrat Umar and sayyeduna, Hadrat Ali met him and they did so.
Meeting great personalities:
Sometimes we think that if we don’t meet our great personalities they will be angry and the curse will be upon us. Here the first declaration is that not a single great Islamic personality will do so, because each and every of them loves the spread of Islam and its services more than his personal meeting and visit. Rather each will be pleased with your work.
Hazrat shaikhul hadeeth Maulana Zakariyya himself narrated in his autobiography (Aap Biti),that while working on proof reading of al Bazlul Majhood I used go to Thana Bhawan I used to get the pages at Zuhr and I had to handover them till the evening that’s why I used to sit in the corner of the masjid till Asr which was the time of common meeting of Hazrat Thanwi and I was not able to attend that due to which I was very much upset I didn’t tolerate it and then I expressed my deep worry and sadness towards this matter before Harat Thanwi himself saying that people come to meet you from everywhere and in spite of being here in the same town this useless man is deprived of this. Hazrat Thanwi said: “Never worry although you are not present in my gathering but I’m in your gathering and enjoy looking at you every now and then and envy you that this is what the (mechanism and )performance of a service means.”
In this lovely but to us a shocking story a very every fantastic and wonderful truth and a satisfactory answer to thousands of questions is that the absence from the meeting of our great personality is exactly equal to the presence in the sight of them rather more pleasing for them than the presence if the absence is for the sake of religion. I would love to repeat the golden, historic, and greatly encouraging and appreciative words of Hazrat Thanwi towards Hazrat maulana Zakariyya saheb :
: “Never worry although you are not present in my gathering but I’m in your gathering and enjoy looking at you every now and then and envy you that this is what the (mechanism and )performance of a service means.”
This is what happened between a great personality who was the beating heart of the entire Islamic world I mean Hazrat Ali Miyan Nadwi (rh) and between Allama Tantawi a renowned figure of the Islamic world when he went to Egypt and gave lectures in several places and Allama used to attend all the lectures but didn’t meet him, At last he met Hazrat Nadwi and said “I used to attend the lectures but I didn’t manage my time to spend on meeting”. A world famous master of Arabic language Hazrat maulana Nur Alam Khalil Al Amini the editor of Magazine Al –ddaie narrated that he himself heard Hazrat Nadwi (rh) narrating this story with Allama Tantawi(rh ).
In this story also the message is the same that Allama spent his time where it was required for religion. To attend the lectures was the need of religion and to meet daily wasn’t so. There Hazrat Nadwi(rh) appreciated this and narrated in his common gathering so that the others also can act the same.
The other point is to tell the friends that I’ve made my time table and ,put in a place where it could be easily seen by the friends and visitors they (Insha’ Allah) He will help me follow the routine.
We can also tell share it orally as it happened with Hadrat Thanvi and Hadrat Shaikulhind.
As it is mentioned in Ashrafussawanih page 30 that Hazrat Shaikhulhind Hazrat Maulana Mahmoddul Hasan Deobandi, the beloved teacher of Hazrat Thanwi (ra)came to him ,he welcomed his beloved teacher, He provided him with every comfort but when his managed time to write came he said to Hazrat Shaikhulhind : “Hazrat! I’ used to write at this time if your permission is granted I’ll be present before you after writing a little”. Hazrat Shaikhul Hind (ra)said: “Of course! Don’t impede any work due to me”.Then Hazrat Thanwi went and wrote a little and again returned in the service of Hazrat Shaikhul Hind.
There are some other remedies here to overcome the hurdles in time management such as:
Not to go in the market in deferent times for different needs but rather to go one time and fulfill all the needs if possible.
Not to phone a person in different times rather to collect almost all the needs then to phone.
To enjoy the facilities to save time if available in journey , provision of common benefits to common people in one common time.
To do more than one work in one time if possible.
To put the watch before us or set alarm from time to time so that we switch from one work to the other as per the managed scheduled.
Serious and comprehensive identification of impediments and their instant removal.
It is written in a book namely Aqwale Salaf about a great scholar of Islam namely Hazrat Maulana Abdulhaiy Farangi Mahalli that there were 3 doors in his study room. His beloved father had arranged shoes for him at all the doors lest he waste even half a minute in taking shoe if the slipper is not at the door from where he wants to go out. (As it is obvious that if a person wants to go out from one door and the shoes are at the other door then he’ll have to go first there to take them)
Earlier it was difficult to do different deeds in one time but now Allah has given us chance to do diverse deeds at one time so for instance we can also listen any dawati and academic speech good news through mobile, laptop, computer and internet at the time of having food or taking tea or snacks. And so we can do at the time of playing, taking bath, changing cloths, cleaning our face or cutting nails I mean during any work which doesn’t engage our listening and understanding power.
