Depression has become a growing concern in our society, affecting people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds. In recent years, there has been an increasing number of people diagnosed with depression, which has led to a growing concern about the causes, effects, and solutions to this mental health issue.

We are going to explore the reasons behind the growing depression in our society, its effects, and possible solutions.

One reason behind the growing depression in our society is the increased pressure to succeed and compete in various aspects of life. The pressure to excel in education, career, and personal relationships has become more intense than ever before, leading to stress and anxiety in individuals. Additionally, the rise of social media and its impact on our lives has also contributed to depression. Social media has created a platform for people to compare themselves with others, leading to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem.

Another reason behind the growing depression is the lack of social support systems. In today's fast-paced world, people are becoming more isolated, and the sense of community is dwindling. People are not connecting with each other as they used to, leading to loneliness and depression.

The effects of depression on individuals can be severe and long-lasting.

Depression can cause physical symptoms such as fatigue, insomnia, and appetite changes. It can also affect an individual's cognitive abilities, leading to difficulty concentrating and making decisions. Depression can also impact an individual's personal relationships, leading to a lack of interest in socializing and difficulty in maintaining healthy relationships.

In our advanced technology society there are several solutions to tackle depression. The first step is to seek help from a mental health professional. Therapy and medication can help individuals manage their symptoms and regain a sense of control over their lives. Additionally, practicing self-care, such as getting enough sleep, exercise, and healthy eating, can also help alleviate symptoms of depression. Finally, building and maintaining a strong support system through family, friends, or support groups can help individuals cope with depression.

In Islamic knowledge, there are several causes of depression, and solutions to alleviate its symptoms can be found in the Quran and Ahadeeth.

One of the primary causes of depression in Islamic knowledge is a lack of connection with Allah (SWT). When a person's relationship with Allah is weak or non-existent, they can experience a sense of emptiness or despair, leading to depression. Allah (SWT) says in the Quran, "And whoever turns away from My remembrance - indeed, he will have a depressed life" (Surah Ta-Ha, 20:124). Therefore, it is essential to strengthen one's relationship with Allah (SWT) through prayer, reciting the Quran, and performing good deeds.

Another cause of depression in Islamic knowledge is a lack of gratitude towards Allah (SWT). When a person focuses on what they lack rather than what they have, they can feel overwhelmed and hopeless, leading to deeper anxiety and covetousness and depression. Allah (SWT) says in the Quran, "And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]" (Surah Ibrahim, 14:7). Therefore, practicing gratitude towards Allah (SWT) and acknowledging His blessings can help alleviate depression symptoms.

Another cause of depression in Islamic knowledge is excessive attachment to the material world. When a person becomes too attached to the worldly possessions or desires, they can experience disappointment, frustration, and despair, leading to depression. Allah (SWT) says in the Quran, "The life of this world is only the enjoyment of deception" (Surah Al-Imran, 3:185). Therefore, it is essential to maintain a balance between the material world and one's spiritual wellbeing by prioritizing Allah (SWT) and the Hereafter.

The solutions to depression in Islamic knowledge are abundant in the Quran and Ahadeeth. Seeking Allah's help through prayer and supplication, maintaining a strong connection with Allah through Quran recitation and good deeds, and practicing gratitude towards Allah (SWT) are some of the ways to alleviate depression symptoms. Additionally, seeking social support from family, friends, and community is also essential,

An-Nu‘mān ibn Bashīr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The believers, in their mutual love, compassion, and sympathy are like a one body; if one of its organs suffers, the whole body will respond to it with sleeplessness and fever."

Sahih/Authentic. - [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

In the last, depression is a growing concern in society, and it affects people of all faiths, cultures, and backgrounds. In Islamic knowledge, the causes of depression are related to one's spiritual wellbeing, attachment to the material world, and lack of gratitude towards Allah (SWT). The solutions to depression can be found in strengthening one's relationship with Allah (SWT), seeking social support, and maintaining a balance between the material world and one's spiritual wellbeing. It is essential to seek help when experiencing symptoms of depression and to remember that Allah (SWT) is the ultimate healer.
